ninjavega - The sugar idea is a cute one, though (unfortunately) may have come a little too late . . . The spoon is at the perfect tilt for that kind of detail. In regard to your question, I did not draw the oval background; everything else was hand-drawn and then colored in photoshop. Thanks for asking!
